The Festival

What is Onam?

Onam is Kerala’s grandest festival — a ten-day harvest celebration welcoming the legendary King Mahabali, whose reign is remembered as a golden age of plenty and equality. Its crowning moment is the Sadhya: a vegetarian feast of dozens of dishes traditionally served on a banana leaf, each in its proper place, moving from crisp and tangy through rich and savory to a parade of sweet payasams. One meal, an entire culture on a leaf.

The heart of the leaf

Avial — vegetables in coconut–yogurt masala, Kerala’s signature. Sadya Sambar & Rasam over matta rice, Kerala’s red-hued rice. Thoran — dry coconut-flecked vegetable stir-fry. Olan — ash gourd & black-eyed peas in gentle coconut milk.

Tang, spice & crunch

Kalan & Errussery — yogurt- and pumpkin-based classics. Ulli Theeyal — shallots in roasted-coconut gravy. Inji curry & pachadis for tang, mango & lemon pickle for fire, upperi & sharkaravaratty (banana chips, plain & jaggery-glazed), crisp pappadam.

The sweet finale

Payasams to finish, as tradition demands — Adapradhaman (rice flakes in jaggery & coconut milk), Palada, Semiya, Wheat, Parippu and Sabudhana — plus Aravana, the temple-style jaggery classic.
